KATHIKUDAM to KALAKUDAM: A Pipeline to Disaster

Jananeethi was approached in 1996 by a group of people from Kathikudam complaining against industrial pollution of Kerala Chemicals and Proteins Limited (KCPL was later christened as Nitta Gelatin India Limited - NGIL) and exploring the chances of a Public Interest Litigation. The matter apparently was serious and calling for urgent legal action. Papers were prepared for a Writ Petition in the High Court of Kerala. However, the de facto petitioners did not turn up thereafter; hence petition was not moved. Later, it was informed that the petitioners were influenced by the polluter company and were given berth in the company. The problems, however, persisted. In this context, Jananeethi in partnership with other like-minded organizations designed a unique psycho-social and pro-active program for distress management, designed for the local needs. A key innovation of this intervention was a pioneering survey of 1690 families which reported a suicide since January 2000; the survey employed a rights based and socially empathetic 'befriending technique'. Vagamon Eco-Terrorism

‘Confuse, if you can not convince’ - is the new strategy Indian polity has been practicing of late. This strategy was effectively and extensively applied in Kerala state, in the context of the Global Investors’ Meet (GIM), the celebrated conglomeration of market, mafia and manipulation. One of the targets of the GIM, is the ‘dream land’ of “God’s own country” – the Vagamon Region.
