Advocacy & Outreach
- NBC, an American news channel, interviewed Adv. Sunilkumar and Executive Director on the ongoing fight against unethical practices in clinical drug trials on human participants. It was broadcasted in America and Europe. Subsequently there were more enquiries about our work from within and outside the country.
- The 8th anniversary of the anti-Coca Cola agitation at Plachimada was observed on 22nd April, the Earth Day.
- A talk by Ms Aruna Roy, the national campaigner of RTI, was organized by the Institute for the public at Kerala Sahitya Academy hall. Ms Roy spoke on RTI and Corruption followed by discussion
- The Institute organized couple of workshops on Kerala Police Bill, 2010 that was attended by experts on civil and criminal laws. The recommendations were submitted to the Committee in the name of Jananeethi Institute.
- Jananeethi was part of the National Campaign for Law Reforms and Legislation on Sexual Offences Against Children. A two day national consultation was organized in Chennai on the request of Hon’ble Minister of Law, Mr.Veerappa Moily. Executive Director, George Pulikuthiyil was a special invitee to the consultation. We submitted our recommendations to the consultation.
- Executive Director and Project coordinator Advocate Sunilkumar were invited on few occasion to deliver talks on All India Radio regarding best practices of clinical drug trials.
- As part of extending the advocacy services of the Institute to north Indian States, Executive Director visited PREM, a registered voluntary organization based in Berhampur in Orissa, and held series of consultations. A project for mediation centres in Orissa was presented for further deliberations.
- During this period several dignitaries visited Jananeethi Institute and learned about our services. They include Ms Corinna Ybaara Arnold, Mr.Mathew Beh and Mr.KS Bijukumar of US Consulate, Chennai, and Ms Preethi Menon from PRAVAH, Dr.Gopakumr Thampi from Dhaka, and Ms Manjusha of SMILE Foundation.
- Dr. Nicolas Johnson, representing the Nottingham Law School in UK, visited Jananeethi Institute and held detailed discussions with staff and Board members regarding the scope of organizing Summer School to their students from 2012 onwards. Initially, they will be sending 5 students for shorter period as interns in September 2011.
- Executive Director was a delegate to the workshop on National Green Tribunal & Tools for Achieving Environmental Democracy organized in Kochi in January 2011.
- The institute has conducted 62 legal literacy workshops in villages. They were intended for and were attended by women and adolescent girls of low income families. Specific legislations and statutory laws in relation to women, girl children and older people were dealt with for the benefit of vulnerable sections of society. There were around 50 to 100 participants in each session.
- Jananeethi staff during 2010-11 has either conducted or facilitated more than forty public functions at various institutions on variety of topics that include laws regarding ragging, sexual harassment at workplace, protection to women from domestic violence, welfare scheme for senior citizens, child rights etc.
- Prof. NN Gokuldas, Board member of Jananeethi, spent several days in different tribal hamlets in Malappuram district conducting awareness programmes on substance abuse, health and hygiene.
